Glendale Diamond Awards for Achievement in the Arts

The Glendale Diamond Award for Achievement in the Arts will be bestowed upon those artists, community members and organizations who have contributed substantially to the cultural life of the community.>The City wishes to recognize the important contribution of artists and arts organizations to the quality of life and economic enhancement of the community, as well as encourage volunteerism and business participation with local arts organizations.

AWARD CATEGORIES

Awards in the following categories can be bestowed annually. Not every category must be filled or awarded each year.

  • Arts organization, either non profit or profit.
  • Emerging artist (12 - 18) - performing, visual, media or literary arts.
  • Artist (19 and over) - performing, visual, media or literary arts.
  • Community Partner (Business or Individual)
  • Lifetime Achievement
NOMINATION PROCESS

Nominations will be garnered from a broad community process, utilizing the local media, outreach to GCC and GUSD, notices on Channel 6, etc.The Commissioners will also assist with getting the word out and encouraging applications.

SELECTION PROCESS

The City’s Arts and Culture Commission and Cultural Affairs Section staff will utilize a selection pool from which to choose the selection panel. Anyone in the community can be added to the pool. Nominators will be asked to provide complete contact information and a brief bio on each candidate. The Commission will review the pool at their October 16, 2008 meeting. A selection panel(s) of 5 community representatives will be drawn from this pool; additionally one member of the Arts and Culture Commission will serve in an ex-officio capacity to each panel. The selection panel will review all applications and supplementary materials, and will make a recommendation to the full body of the Arts and Culture Commission for approval.

PUBLIC ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

All winners will be given an opportunity to participate in a public event of some kind so that the public has a chance to meet the honorees and view or experience their work. This event could be as simple as a one-night showcase or an exhibition. This public event may also be utilized as a fundraiser for the Commission’s programs.

CRITERION AND APPLICATION PROCESS

1. YOUNG ARTIST (12 - 18) - PERFORMING, VISUAL, MEDIA OR LITERARY ARTS
  • Only one winner will be recognized; no runners up.
  • Must be a student in GUSD or local private school, GCC, or a resident of Glendale.
  • Demonstration of talent and commitment to the arts.
  • Must have a proven connection to the City of Glendale and be a contributor to the quality of life of the City
  • No one under 12 or over 18 will be considered.
Application Materials:
  • Nomination form with statement explaining why this person is exceptional and how the nominee
  • Submission of artwork:
    • Visual and Media Artists:  portfolio with 7 – 10 pieces;
    • Performing artists:  video, audio, CD or DVD with 3 – 5 works;
    • Literary artist:  7 – 10 written pieces.
2. ARTIST (19+) - PERFORMING, VISUAL, MEDIA OR LITERARY ARTS
  • Only one winner will be recognized; no runners up.
  • Artist must be a resident of Glendale and be a contributor to the quality of life of the City;
  • Demonstration of commitment to and development of craft.

Application Materials:

  • Nomination form with statement explaining why this person is exceptional and how the nominee has contributed to the quality of life of the City.
  • Submission of artwork: 
    • Visual and Media Artists:  up to 20 slides or other visual
  • representation of work;
    • Performing artists:  video, audio, cd or dvd with 3 – 5 works;
    • Literary artist:  up to 20 examples of written work.
  • Resume that demonstrates professionalism as an artist.
  • Artist’s statement (no more than 1 page.)
  • 2 references
  • OPTIONAL: Up to 5 reviews, catalog excerpts, etc. can also be submitted.
3. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
  • Can be bestowed on anyone in community (artist, friend of the arts, business person, etc.)
  • Artist or arts professional must have 20+ year history of practicing their craft.
  • Business or individual must have exceptional length or depth of commitment to the arts.
  • Must have a proven connection to the City of Glendale and be a contributor to the quality of life of the    City.
Application Materials:
  • Nomination form with statement explaining why this person deserves to be recognized for a lifetime  achievement award, why they are exceptional and how they have contributed to the cultural life of the City.
  • Contact information for at least one corroborator.
4. ARTS ORGANIZATION – PROFIT OR NON-PROFIT
  • Can be established in community for any length of time.
  • Contributor to the life of the arts in the region.
Application Materials:
  • Nomination form with statement explaining why this organization is exceptional.
5. COMMUNITY PARTNER (BUSINESS OR INDIVIDUAL)
  • Can be established in community for any length of time.
  • Can be a business or individual.
Application Materials:
  • Nomination form with statement explaining how this business has exceptionally contributed to the arts.
