"Death Sentence" by Victor Yates

“Death Sentence” is a literary-protest performance that is a direct response to police brutality against Black bodies. The creator of the project, Victor Yates, will interweave the last words of Black people murdered by the police into an original spoken word poem that contains five parts. The project examines collective Black pain from police violence, the importance of passing down history, and queer identity within the Black Lives Matter movement. The goal is to help viewers work through and heal from the trauma.

Black in Glendale Community Healing Circ

In celebration of Black History Month, Black in Glendale hosted a series of Community Healing Circles throughout February 2021:

Spoken Yoga w/ Melvin

Compassionate Healing flow. This experience is curated for the parent and caregiver to take a moment for self-care and healing. This Circle will focus on compassionately connecting to the sound and movement of the breath. We will balance our breath and emotions and take that gift and connect it gently to our body. There will be a higher sense of clarity for the moment , whether that moment be calm or chaotic. Healing begins in a safe space of stillness.

Storytelling w/ Ernie de Silva

A Circle in personal storytelling; In tumultuous times like this we will take the time together to study how to say what we mean, and give the space to explore exactly how we mean to say it. Amplify your personal story. Amplify & Heal.

Healing Movement w/ Tanita Fadeyola

The body becomes the voice and uses basic movements to encourage and inspire healing through the dance. This Circle will explore the healing connection of African dances from around the world and creating harmony in our bodies and therefore our communities.

Movement Affirmations w/ Tanita Fadyeyola

This Circle will creatively explore shadow energy and how to use Movement and Affirmations to navigate through it so that you can amplify your voice and still effectively engage your goals.... wellness, joy, satisfaction, fulfillment, collaboration, productivity, personal and community success...they're all just a few movements away!

Therapeutic Art w/ Ann Marie

This Circle will foster the joy of creativity and provide drawing and painting techniques in a supportive and fun environment, where everyone can discover their voice and style; a journey of healing through creative expression.

This temporary public art engagement program is sponsored by the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission through funding from the Urban Art Program Plan.
