Citywide Public Arts Landmarks RFQ
Artists and artist teams are invited to apply to a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for public art landmarks in the City of Glendale.
Three different project opportunities are available that are designed to engage the community and showcase the cultural diversity of Glendale and enhance the various civic and public spaces. Each of the individual locations demand unique approaches and creative uses of materials and sustainability. The three opportunities are:
Montrose Circular Benches. Budget $300,000. This location and project is calling for an Artist or Artist Team to deliver a painted or tile mosaic application to the 3 existing benches.
Palmer Park Basketball Mural. Artist Design Fee $30,000. This location and project is calling for an Artist or Artist Team to deliver a basketball court mural at Palmer Park.
Patterson Ave / 134 Tunnel. Budget $300,000. This location and project is calling for an Artist or Artist Team to deliver a lighting installation that would make the tunnel a brighter and more inviting space for pedestrians to use.
This RFQ is for qualifications only. Applicants should not propose a concept when applying to the RFQ. When applying to the RFQ, artists and artist teams may apply for one or multiple opportunities that they feel they can develop strong concepts and visions for. The deadline to apply is January 19, 2024 at 5:00pm PST.

Color Everywhere Verdugo Park Mural
Verdugo Park's South Facility building near the Skate Park has a new colorful and picturesque mural titled Color Everywhere by artist Erin Miller Wray.
Erin’s hope for this piece is to surprise people with a new bold punch of color that serves as a pillar for community and engagement. In an exploration of color and scale, the design expands beyond a mural to create an experiential piece that turns the building into a vibrant sculpture in the outdoor park setting. With paint covering the building from top to bottom, the structure now exists as a fully immersive piece of art drawing people in and evoking a sense of exciting playfulness with its vibrancy and size.
This mural project was sponsored by the Arts and Culture Commission, in partnership with Library, Arts & Culture and Community Services & Parks.
New Exhibition on View at Brand Library
Brand Library & Art Center, Glendale Library, Arts & Culture, and the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) present “If Memory Serves: Photography, Recollections and Vision”. Curated by LACP Executive Director Rotem Rozental, Ph.D., this exhibition explores the moments our devices betray us, our recollections fail us, and our pictures refuse to bring back the people they once captured. The works on view emerges from the intersection of our haunting pasts, possible futures and our relationships with images, technologies and the systems that ask us to speak for our photographs. "If Memory Serves" is on view at Brand Library & Art Center through February 24, 2024.
Upcoming Exhibition at ReflectSpace Gallery
“Shepard Fairey: Peace is Radical” will open at ReflectSpace Gallery in Glendale Central Library on January 20, 2024. A globally recognized cultural and street art icon widely known for his OBEY sticker campaign and Obama’s “Hope” poster, artist-activist Shepard Fairey has sourced the skateboard and punk rock culture into raising awareness of critical social justice issues worldwide. More information will be released in the coming weeks.
