GLENDALE, CA – Artists and community members are invited to apply to the Beyond the Box program. The application portal opened on Monday, June 2 at 10:00 AM PST and closes on Friday, July 25 at 5:00 PM PST.
The goal of Beyond the Box is to bring beauty to unexpected places. The program enhances the aesthetics of the city, promotes civic pride, and increases pedestrian traffic while creating an attractive environment and allowing art to be introduced to the public in a creative and inventive way. The theme of this year’s program is Celebrating Glendale in which applicants are encouraged to develop a design focusing on what makes Glendale special. Examples may include historic landmarks such as the Alex Theatre, vibrant outdoor spaces like Verdugo Park and Deukmejian Park, library branches like Brand Library & Art Center, or Glendale Police Department and Glendale Fire Department Wellness K9s, Brisket and Cooper. Artists are highly encouraged to incorporate these characteristics and resources distinct to Glendale in their designs.
The Arts and Culture Commission (ACC) will fund $750.00 per utility box design. The ACC anticipates selecting artwork for 5 utility boxes. Selected artists will submit a final design rendering to be printed onto a vinyl wrap which will cover the exterior of a utility box. Artists will not be printing or installing the vinyl wrap designs. Artists are only responsible for submitting a final design rendering.
Beyond the Box is open to all local and regional artists. The ACC encourages applications from both new and established artists, and artists may apply as an individual artist or as a group. Group submissions may be for a single utility box or multiple utility boxes. While artists and artist groups may request a specific utility box location on the application, they are not guaranteed a specified location.
Beyond the Box is supported by the City of Glendale and the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission. To learn more about Beyond the Box and to apply, visit GlendaleArtsandCulture.org/beyondthebox.
