GLENDALE, CA – Threshold: Between Wilderness and Wonder by Candace and Pete Metzger is on display at the Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station from Monday, September 22 - Friday, November 14, 2025. This immersive installation transforms the Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station into a living sanctuary that evolves from day to night. By day, sculptural elements – a human figure amid tree silhouettes, hanging tendrils, and biomorphic cocoons – create a physical forest microcosm inviting contemplation of our place within natural systems. The work suggests humans are complex organisms within larger ecological networks, our bodies functioning as cells in the environmental body. Threshold offers a dual invitation: by day, to recognize our biological interconnectedness with all living things; by night, to witness how light reveals extraordinary beauty within ordinary forms. It creates a space where viewers can pause, see anew and discover that in both wilderness and wonder, healing can be found.
Candace J. Metzger’s work explores the complex emotional terrain of human existence within our rapidly changing world and climate reality. Through multimedia paintings using acrylics, collage, and digital methods, she creates narrative pieces that examine our deep yet fragile connections with animals and the natural world, blending surreal and whimsical imagery in a layered, dreamy aesthetic, filled with storytelling.
Pete Metzger’s work embodies the intersection of graphic design, moving image, and photography, creating visually striking narratives that captivate and engage audiences. Through his diverse artistic approaches – from clean, sophisticated graphic design to emotionally resonant photography to immersive theatrical experiences – he explores the boundaries of visual storytelling.
An artist reception will be hosted by the Adams Square Neighborhood Association on Saturday, September 27, 2025, 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM. Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station is located at 1020 E. Palmer Ave., Glendale, CA 91205. This art installation is generously sponsored by the Glendale Arts & Culture Commission through funding from the Urban Art Program, and support from Glendale Library, Arts & Culture, Glendale Community Services & Parks, and the Adams Hill Neighborhood Association.
